Why I Left Corporate Engineering to Build lulimi

For the past twenty years, I lived what many people consider an enviable life: I was an engineer designing consumer products.

People often picture an engineer’s life as a noble pursuit of perfection—diving into medical papers, running acoustics and stress tests, constantly refining prototypes at the intersection of science and craftsmanship, all to build something that genuinely improves someone’s life.

I wish that had been the reality.

Instead, over two decades in corporate boardrooms, I watched brilliant engineering get compromised. Half of my time wasn’t spent making products better; it was dictated by corporate mandates, board members, and bottom-line pressures. We were told to cut corners, swap out durable components for cheaper plastics, and quietly gloss over flaws just to protect quarterly profit margins.

Every time a product shipped knowing it could have been so much better, a part of me broke.

Because to me, engineering was never just a job. The purest joy I’ve ever experienced is the quiet satisfaction of knowing someone out there uses a product I built—and that it actually brought them peace, comfort, or ease. That honest appreciation is worth far more than any executive bonus.

So after twenty years, I walked away. I started lulimi.

lulimi isn’t an anonymous factory or an investment-backed conglomerate looking for an exit. It is my workshop, built on a single, uncompromising principle: Honesty in what we build.

When we design something at lulimi, there are no shareholders demanding we shave twenty cents off a crucial component. We study the research, obsess over the details, and build things meant to last. We want lulimi to feel less like another tech gadget in your house and more like a dependable member of the family—arriving at your doorstep with genuine warmth, thoughtful simplicity, and the quiet reliability you deserve every single day.

Thank you for welcoming our work into your home.

Warmly,

Bob
